The Building Process

The steps required to build are set out in the Building Guidelines, but here is a simplified breakdown of the steps:

 

1.  Get a site specific geotechnical report.

• This will set out the elevation required for your cabin as well as where to install septic.

• SCH can recommend people we’ve used.

 

2.  Choose a builder (see below for suggestions).

• Cabins are restricted to a maximum 1,500 square feet footprint including any additions such as a porch, deck, and/or garage, with a maximum of 2 levels and maximum building height of 33 feet.

• Maximum footprint of all roof coverings including all accessory buildings is not to exceed 1/3 of the site area.

 

3.  Submit a set of plans to SCH’s Building Committee for written approval. Plans include:

• A proposal with exterior plans, elevations and specifications, including materials and colours to be used, and showing the location on the site.

• Intended use of the cabin.

• Copies of drawings approved by a Professional Engineer.

 

4.  Submit plans to the District of Hope.

• Obtain a building permit.

 

5.  Obtain permits for services and provide to SCH.

• Permits for services are required to ensure health and safety standards, including power, water, and septic (a septic permit is issued by Fraser Health).

 

6.  Install septic.

 

7.  Build your cabin!

• The cabin must be completed within 24 months from start date.

• You can place an RV or motorhome on your site while your cabin is being built.

 

8.  Obtain final approval and an occupancy permit from the District of Hope.

• Provide a copy to SCH’s Building Committee.
